Ejection 012: Lance Barrett (2)

HP Umpire Lance Barrett ejected Padres Manager Bud Black for arguing a balk call in the top of the 6th inning of the Nationals-Padres game. With two out and one on and with Nationals batter Jayson Werth batting, Padres pitcher Clayton Richard was called for a balk advancing Nationals R1 Mark DeRosa to second base. Replays indicate Richard did not properly step directly towards first base as in Rule 8.05, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

This is Lance Barrett (94)'s second ejection of 2012.
Lance Barrett now has 3 points in the UEFL (-2 Previous + 3 AAA + 2 Correct Call = 3).
Crew Chief Gary Darling now has 4 points in the Crew Division (3 Previous + 1 Correct Call = 4).
*After review, the Appeals Board has summarily confirmed Quality of Correctness ("Correct" ==> "Correct).

UEFL Standings Update
1) 8 pts: cyclone14
2) 7 pts: TheGunsofHochuli
3) 6 pts: JRD, millerump18
5) 4 pts: BillMueller, nkcaump, Spence1222, Turducken
9) 3 pts: Jeremy, JohnShulockFan, UmpAtty

This is the 12th ejection of 2012.
This is the 8th Manager ejection of 2012.
This is Bud Black's second ejection of 2012.

At least Barrett saw it. Left handed pitcher crossing the plane of the pitcher's plate. Don't know what 1st and 3rd were watching. Maybe had a few too many last night or maybe hanging the kid out to dry. Who knows. Great call by Barrett.

You can definitely see it from the home plate angle and the angle directly after that. He raises his leg and begins to lean towards home with his leg while looking towards the plate. The motion is not entirely fluid, nor is it consistent with a legal, left-handed pick-off. There's a definitive change of direction there.

This video carries the actual toss... http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=20897679&c_id=mlb

thought from the hp angle it was a great call, and excellent patience to let Black go to the mound and stay a while before going out to break it up. He knew before he went he was going to get an ear full and he let Black have some rope and then he tossed him, all around good job here by Barrett.

This is a fantastic call by Lance Barrett. So many umpires at all levels are afraid of this balk call. The commentators need to refresh themselves on the rules. The pitcher must step directly to the bag on the pickoff. He went nearly 8 to 10 inches past where is free foot was located once he was set. clearly a balk. The reason the 1st base umpire is not calling this is he is preparing for the play at 1st base. Also, plate guy has great look at the body and how the leg moves on this play.

LB has never been afraid to call a balk. I worked with him in extended spring his first year. Runner on third, RHP tries the same kind of lefty move to pick him off, but does just what Richard did. Balk, score the run. Knew the kid had big cojones right then. Great guy too. Proud of/happy for him.

Ok it's a really good call from a guy who is proving he belongs... Well handled... But Lance needs to make an adjestment on his strike zone to right handed batters.... I'm just going to point out I've never seen a guy who doesn't miss a pitch to lefties who misses so many to righties... It's a pattern I've been noticing with the naked eye but I decided to put it to the test... And wow Here is the lefty chart

and here is his chart with right handed batters...

I don't know anyone who isn't rooting for Lance... The Barrett duo (rusty) are both too good for both too miss!!

I don't really understand the balk rules, so I'll go along with what the people who do said about the call. Sadly, the Padres announcers apparently don't understand the balk rules either. All they seem to understand is criticizing the umpires. At this point, I would expect nothing else from them. As for Black, don't act shocked that you got ejected. You know that you can't argue a balk call.

Clearly a balk, very good call. If anyone thinks it's not a balk I hope they are not an umpire.

I love this call. Seriously. I'm challenged as to why U1 didn't catch this as it should have been obvious.

I love the ejection, the handling of it, everything.

This should be in a textbook somewhere.

I think U1 might of been blocked by the runner and U3 was probably thinking about what bar he wanted to go to after the game.

@ kickersrule

I take it you are not a big fan of Gary Darling?

I didn't even know he was the one at 3rd. I was just making a joke. I'm betting when the umpires are at 3B they fall asleep a lot.

Very well said kickers... This should be called by Emmel.. who is at 1st base... Lets hope a bug flew into his eye or there was a naked woman in a luxary box.. Nobody wants to take the field with the guy who passes on the big call... Gary Darling, well i don't know too many people on here who have spoken too highly of him in recent memory... He does seem to be sleepwalking through a lot of games... And then BOOM a game blows up... Thought he handled the near fight earlier in the year very well though.

I will agree that Darling does seem to be lazy on the bases a lot of the time. But I have watched a few of his plate jobs and he is a very very good balls-strikes umpire. I would say he is top 5 in the MLB in that category. That is probably the main reason he consistently works playoff series, becaus he is probably not the best CC out there.

Joe West has just ran Joe Girardi from the Tigers-Yankees game. According to the Tigers radio broadcast, Girardi kicked some dirt (I believe it was not kicked on West).

What is the MLB and MiLB rule. Does the whole complete foot have to cross the back edge of the rubber to be a balk, or just a toe have to cross the back edge of the rubber to be a balk.

Anonymous said...

Really? 'Plane???" This is not a 'plane of the rubber was crossed' balk as pitcher is picking off at first, and then you bash the two guys on the lines for not paying attention? Someone was not paying attention alright... from their couch.

Entire foot but that's not why this is a balk

wwjd said...

CHALANGE This is not a balk the pitcher granted did not step directly to first but he did not step towards homeplate there was no decption in his act of throwing to first it's a excellent move that Richards has but it is not a balk

This ruling has been challenged and is under review.

After review, the Appeals Board has summarily confirmed Quality of Correctness as Correct as a default decision after the summary denial of this appeal. Because this is a summary decision, only one vote is associated with this ruling.

The Board has rejected certiorari because the deadline has already passed in which an appeal or challenge may be filed.

Per UEFL Rule 6-2, reviewable decisions "must be challenged during the seasonal phase in which the ejection occurs."

Rule 2-1-a specifies phases of the season: "(2) Phase (ii) encompasses all games played on or after Opening Day of the Regular Season, ending on April 30 if the Regular Season's first game is played or started in March."

The Seattle Mariners defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-1 in extra innings on March 28, 2012 during MLB's first Regular Season contest of 2012. Therefore, Phase ii concluded on April 30. Because Ejection 012 occured on April 24, 2012, it falls under Phase ii and is subject to Rules 2-1-a-2 and 6-2.

Summarily denied and confirmed, 1-0.
